Year 1

Welcome back to Summer 2!
We hope you have all had a lovely break and are ready for the last busy few weeks ahead before we finish for the summer.
This term, we will be starting our new theme with our theme question being 'What is it like to live in Africa?' . The children will have the opportunity to delve into the lives of the people of Africa, their way of life and also what school life is like for children of Africa. Children will be able to contrast and compare to what life is like in England and their way of living. Additionally, we will be learning all about the animals of the Savannah creating fact files and labelling parts of each animal. Furthermore, the children will learn how most of these animals are under threat and why. During our theme every Friday, children will be able to create their own art work by researching traditional African patterns and animal patterns. We will focus on history, geography, art, English and many more!
In English, we will be starting a brand new text called 'Lila and the Secret of Rain' where the children will have lots of different opportunities to create some drama and role play of the text, create character descriptions, hot seat each other as different characters and sequencing events in the story. There will also be music opportunities, as the children will be able to explore instruments to create a piece of dramatic music for different scenes from the text.
In maths, for the first couple of weeks we will be focusing on multiplication and division where children will secure their knowledge of multiples of 2's, 5's and 10's. The children will then complete lots of practical activities whilst learning about doubling and halving. We will look at linking this to real life objects like pencils, wheels, animal legs etc to help the children develop this skill. Moving on, the children will learn all about fractions, starting with a half and then a quarter. Again, we will be completing lots of practical activities to allow the children to be hands on.
Important information
This half term PE lessons will be on Monday morning so please don't forget your PE kits! :)
These will be taught by Premier Sports which means your children get the opportunity to experience some fantastic sessions and will be able to develop brand new skills and a love for PE. Year 1 will also have PE each Wednesday.
Book bags need to be in on a daily basis so we can change your child's book and make sure we can read with them. Their books are changed at least once a week.
We would also please like to ask that parents and carers continue to encourage their children to use our brilliant school reading scheme Bug Club. This is a fantastic resource to help your children develop their reading skills and phonics. If your child needs new books please do not hesitate to let us know.
Your class teacher is Miss Roberts and your teaching assistant is Mrs Ford.
We hope to have a brilliant half term, continuing to grow, flourish and reach our full potential. You have made so many St Anne's memories already and we cannot wait for you to make many more as you continue your Year 1 journey.
Miss Roberts and Mrs Ford xx
