Welcome back to our Spring 2 term!
We hope you have had a lovely half term and are ready for a very busy 5 weeks on the lead up to our year 2 SATS tests.
Your class teachers continue to be Miss Briers and Mrs Cookson and your teaching assistant will be Mrs Barry.
We will be starting a brand new theme this half term with our theme question 'Why didn't the Titanic float?'. Over the next 5 weeks children will have the opportunity to discover more about this historic event and will be asking questions focusing on what the Titanic was like, did all passengers have the same experience and why did it sink. Through our theme Fridays children will have the opportunity to create art work based on landscapes and will be researching this significant event and where the Titanic came from and traveled to.
In English we will be focusing on non fiction texts and will be suing these to support our research into the Titanic before creating our own non fiction information text in the form of a newspaper report. Children will have the opportunity to plan, research using various sources, make notes and then create their own information writing using headings, sub headings and paragraphs etc. Later in the half term we will be moving on to the power of reading text 'The Black Rock'.
In maths we will be focusing on statistics before moving on to telling the time. Children will be learning to tell the time to 5 minute intervals and will be comparing ordering and sequencing times.
Children will be continuing to develop their quick mental maths skills and learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will particularly be focusing on developing our reasoning skills this half term.
This next 5 weeks is the lead up in year 2 to our SATS and therefore throughout the half term children will be revising previous maths concepts already taught and having the opportunity to practice sitting some mock reading and maths tests in preparation.
Please keep an eye out for our parents workshop focusing on the SATS and what these involve.
Our school daily timetable for children in KS1 will be playtime 10.25 - 10.40 and lunch 11.45 - 12.45.
In year 2 we have a big focus on spellings and cursive handwriting. Our timetable includes a teaching session on this daily - please support your child with this at home by practising the weekly spellings each night and focus on their hand writing when doing so. Spellings will be sent home every Friday and children will be tested on these on the following Friday.
Multiplication is a huge focus in year 2 and we ask all parents and carers to support us with this by practising the 2 5 and 10 times tables at home. Now your child is in year 2 they will be given log in details for our TIMES TABLE ROCKSTARS and will be shown how to use this in school - we ask if you could continue to support with this at home too please.
There will be weekly times table tests to support your child with their development of this.
We would please like to ask that all parents/carers continue to encourage their children to access our school reading scheme Bug Club and please feel free to share your experiences of this with us. If your child needs new books please do not hesitate to let us know.
PE lessons will be on a Tuesday so please don't forget your PE kit :) These sessions will be taught by our brand new company Premier Sports so your children will have an amazing opportunity to develop a love of new sports and develop their skills.
Children should all be wearing full school uniform including black shoes please.
We look forward to seeing you all back to school in 2019 and ready to kick start another brilliant year!!
