Welcome back to our Summer 2 term!
We hope you have had a lovely relaxing half term after a very busy half term in Year 2! You all worked extremely hard with your SATS and we couldn't be prouder - well done! Now onward and upwards to a fun filled last half term in year 2.
This half term will be a busy one filled with Year 2 leading Mass, the summer fair, sports day, reports being sent home and children meeting their new year 3 teacher and preparing for this transition. Please keep an eye on Facebook and our newsletter for upcoming dates.
Your class teachers continue to be Miss Briers and Mrs Cookson and your teaching assistant will be Mrs Barry.
Our key question for this half term will be.....'What would it be like to live in Africa?'. Children will be spending their final half term in year 2 discovering lots of information about the country Africa, the people who live here, the animals who calls this country their home and comparing Africa to where we live.
Through our theme Fridays children will have the opportunity to create art work, paint patterns, learn about what it would be like to live in Africa, discover where Africa is through map work and debate whether wild animals should be kept in zoos or not.
In English we will be using the power of reading text 'Lila and the Secret of Rain' where children will have the opportunity to write character descriptions, use drama and role play, sequence events, create story maps and learn about what other countries are like.
In maths we will be revisiting a range of areas following on from the SATS and children will be preparing for the transition into year 3 by ensuring they are secure with year 2 concepts.
Children will be continuing to develop their quick mental maths skills and learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will particularly be focusing on developing our reasoning skills this half term.
Our school daily timetable for children in KS1 will be playtime 10.25 - 10.40 and lunch 11.45 - 12.45.
In year 2 we have a big focus on spellings and cursive handwriting. Our timetable includes a teaching session on this daily - please support your child with this at home by practicing the weekly spellings each night and focus on their hand writing when doing so. Spellings will be sent home every Friday and children will be tested on these on the following Friday.
Multiplication is a huge focus in year 2 and we ask all parents and carers to support us with this by practising the 2 5 and 10 times tables at home. Now your child is in year 2 they will be given log in details for our TIMES TABLE ROCKSTARS and will be shown how to use this in school - we ask if you could continue to support with this at home too please.
There will be weekly times table tests to support your child with their development of this.
We would please like to ask that all parents/carers continue to encourage their children to access our school reading scheme Bug Club and please feel free to share your experiences of this with us. If your child needs new books please do not hesitate to let us know.
PE lessons will be on a Tuesday so please don't forget your PE kit :) These sessions will be taught by our brand new company Premier Sports so your children will have an amazing opportunity to develop a love of new sports and develop their skills.
Children should all be wearing full school uniform including black shoes please.
We look forward to seeing you all back to school and enjoying our final half term with your wonderful children in Year 2.
